I travel to the Isle of Man with the aim of understanding what it means to be Manx in the modern world. Through a journey on foot across the island, the film explores identity, independence, and the role of tradition in a rapidly globalising society.
At the heart of the story is Tynwald—the island’s parliament and the oldest continuous parliamentary body in the world. During my time on the island, I meet with Juan Watterson, Speaker of the House of Keys, to gain insight into the island’s political identity and its unique position as a self-governing nation.
As I hike across the landscape, conversations with locals reveal a deep connection to heritage, language, and community. The film reflects on how smaller nations preserve their identity in the face of global influence, and what it means to belong to a place with such a strong sense of history and autonomy.
Blending physical journey with personal and political exploration, A Journey for Hope is an attempt to understand how culture, governance, and identity intersect on an island shaped by both tradition and change.
